What do we do with wool we don't process into roving or yarn? There is always some wool that we discard because it is too matted, has too much plant debris, is too short or coarse. We now have a use for that fiber - Wool Fertilizer Pellets!
Wool pellets are a natural, slow-release fertilizer and soil amendment made from 100% raw sheep's wool. They offer various benefits for gardens, including improved soil structure, water retention, and nutrient supply. Wool pellets are a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fertilizers and other soil additives. Wool pellets are all natural and not toxic to pollinating insects.
Otter Lake Farm in Weedsport NY works with NYS sheep farms to shred unwanted wool and turn it into pellets. We brought wool from nearby sheep farms to Otter Lake Farm and you can now purchase these wool fertilizer pellets from CeCe's Wool!
To make the pellets, the wool is first sorted (very matted or dirty wool is not used). The wool goes through a shredder to break up the fiber. That material is then put in a machine that heats and compresses the wool into pellets. The pellets are weighed and bagged up once they are cooled.
Wool Fertilizer Pellets have a minimum Nitrogen-Phosphate-Potash (NPK) of 9-0-2. Pellets can also hold up to 30% of their weight in water which helps to retain moisture in potted plants. Up to 50% of the weight of wool is carbon, which, when buried in garden soil, improves nutrient uptake by plant roots and aids in improving soil tilth. Wool Fertilizer Pellets break down in the soil and slowly feed plant nutrients over a period of up to 6 months. After 6 months the wool pellets will be completely broken down in the soil.
A 16 oz bag can feed a 30 square feet of garden soil or 12 gallons of potting soil.
The 5# bag can feed a 150 square foot garden bed or 60 gallons of potting soil.
The 10# bag can feed a 300 square foot garden bed or 120 gallons of potting soil.
DIRECTIONS: Mix 1/2 C. of wool pellets into a gallon of soil for potted plants/vegetables and gently work into the soil. For unplanted garden beds, sprinkle on top of soil and work into the soil to a depth of 2"-4".
